Minerals, Rocks and Fossils
Collecting minerals, rocks and fossils is a
neat way to learn about our world. Even amateurs
can make important discoveries. When you study
rocks and fossils, you are finding out about the
materials from which the Earth is made. You will
alsolearn all about the history of the Earth.
Minerals are natural occuring, nonliving substan-
ces, such as quartz or diamond. Each mineral is
made of many particles. Rocks are made of ninerals.
Rocks form over millions of years. An exception is
the rock that is formed by an erupting volcano.
Fossils are the remains or marks of things that
were alive thousands or millions of years ago.
Rock and fossil collecting is a fascinating
hobby. You can go hunting for specimens even in
your own back yard.
I have found some very nice websites that might
help you identify or just learn more about rock
collecting. Below you will find links to some of
my favorite sites.
